Research shows that we are more confident in our abilities to identify AI-generated content than we should be. In the Global Online Safety survey, respondents were asked to take a quiz in which they had to identify images as AI-generated or real.
- Before taking the quiz, only 46% of respondents said that it is “hard” to spot AI-generated images. The rest were confident in their abilities to identify AI-generated images.
- After taking the quiz, 91% of respondents admitted that identifying AI-generated images is hard. Many did not perform as well on the quiz as they thought they would.
In all, only 38% of the images in the “Real or Not” quiz were identified correctly. Do your AI-identification skills measure up? Click here to take the quiz yourself!
Parents and teachers can learn more about improving their AI identification skills, and in turn, the skills of their children and students, with this activity from the News Literacy Project. The slides have instructions and speaker notes to guide you through.
