Hey Trish, any thoughts on coming up with really good captions for content? I feel like a good caption can make a post so much cooler. 😁
Hi there, and welcome back to another week of Ask Trish! I hope you’re all well and having a wonderful week (if you’re like me, that means getting excited for fall, which is just around the corner – and my favorite season of the year! I am definitely a Pumpkin Spice Latte gal 😋).
And speaking of things to get excited about…whether you’re posting pics on Insta or sharing a new TikTok video, there’s nothing more exciting than securing the #perfectsocialmediacaption. Thanks a ton to this week’s question-er for asking this very relatable, relevant question, that, I’m sure, so many readers are wondering about. You’re so right – a witty, apt caption can take content that extra mile. But in my experience, all of my amazing caption ideas come to me when I’m not posting content. And then, when I am about to share something on Insta…I’ve got the caption-equivalent of writer’s block. It’s super frustrating! To fix that problem, over the years, I’ve compiled a series of caption tips and tricks, little rules to help me deliver the perfect social media caption, in the moment. And since you’ve asked…you shall receive. In this week’s post, I’m going to share my secret suggestions with y’all. (I know! Cue the anticipatory music.) Jokes aside, this week’s post will be quite brief…so after you’ve finished reading it, take the extra time I’ve given you and go come up with a new, witty social media caption for your content. There’s nothing like putting new knowledge into practice!
Sound like a plan? Amazing! Without further ado, check out my tips for the perfect social media caption:
- Go emoji crazy. Emojis in captions are making a comeback. For a little while, they were considered a bit forced and unnatural…but nowadays, emojis are where it’s at. And I get it – they’re funny, they’re to-the-point, and you can get pretty creative with them. So if you’re struggling to come up with the right words for your post, let the emojis do the talking instead. I love doing a simple ❤️emoji for posts with friends, or emojis like 🌊for my vacations.
- Try to think up a fun pun. There are few things that make a caption (in any context, really) more clever than a good pun. So if you’re graduating from college, don’t just say “I graduated!” Say that you “gradu-ATEd,” because you really ate that up! (For the adults here, if you “ate” something, it means that you crushed it.) Puns can be surprisingly easy to spot, and they’re super fun to think of. In fact, you can invite a few friends over and do some pun-brainstorming together. Anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes later, you’ll be typing up the wittiest caption ever!
- When in doubt, go super basic. For a while now, a super simple, basic caption has also been in. Don’t know how to describe how special your amazing trip to London was? No worries. “Just a girl in London 💗” will do the trick. Some of my best-performing captions have been captions that literally described what was in the picture, e.g., “Me and Mom 🤗”. So if you’re really stuck, remember you’ve got an out – just briefly type up what you’re looking at. And boom – to your surprise, you’ll be looking at a pretty perfect caption.
- If you want virality, use hashtags. Hashtags help users sort through/find content; in addition, the right hashtag can help a platform push your content to the right communities. Try to latch onto hashtags that are very commonly used – niche hashtags, while more specific, are likely to have less visibility. And who knows? If your hashtag is clever, you might just start a new trend.
- Hop on a trend. If you’re completely out of ideas, no worries – just hop on a popular trend. For instance, recently, the “demure” trend has got tons of folks sharing content with captions that describe their goings-on as “very demure.” You can, too! You can even poke fun at the trend – share a picture of you eating tons of pizza and say it’s “very demure.”
- ReThink before you type. This is the most important tip…before you share any caption, pause and think about what you’re saying. Is it kind? Is it affirming? Does it reflect you and your values? Don’t ever let a temptation to be super “witty” or “cool” lead you to say something that’s actually super uncool. Trust me, it’s not worth it.
I hope you enjoyed this fun post…happy caption-writing! And when you have a moment – whether you have other fun social media-related questions or you’re pondering something more serious, share your concerns and musings with me here. It literally takes 30 seconds – seriously! So get submitting! Thank you all a ton in advance for your amazing contributions.
Have a great week,
Trish
