In Massachusetts, 68% of 14-15 year old males have gambled in the past year. The statistics only increase as teens age. Parents’ concerns about teen gambling are increasing too. According to a new national poll on children’s health:
- 55% of parents aren’t aware of their state’s legal age for online gambling.
- 1 in 6 parents admit they probably wouldn’t know if their child was betting online.
- Only 25% of parents have talked to their teens about online betting.
Some of the risks of underage online betting that parents worry about include:
- Going into debt
- Becoming addicted
- Ruining their credit score
Most teens have already been exposed to online gambling advertisements. Sarah Clark, M.P.H. from Michigan Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation, explains, “Young people who engage in fantasy sports or gaming apps intended for adults see ads which feature entertainers and sports figures that are popular with teens and young adults. Along with enticing bonuses, online social casino games and graphics encourage continued use.”
