If you’ve never heard of pink slime journalism, you’re not alone. The term describes websites that look like legitimate local news outlets but are actually funded to push a political agenda. Like processed “pink slime” meat made to resemble ground beef, these sites are manufactured to look like hometown newspapers.

Researchers at Yale University recently found that people often trust these fake local news sites more than real ones because they don’t include fake news. Instead, as researchers explain, “The algorithmically generated sites … mimic the appearance of legitimate local newspapers, but they don’t necessarily fabricate news stories.” The content may be drawn from government press releases or crime reports. Pink slime “stories are often technically accurate, but the sites are designed to look like legitimate local newspapers while quietly advancing a political agenda.” Parents and teachers can explore this new area of news literacy with kids and teens.

A helpful comic from the Poynter Institute breaks down pink slime visually. When explaining it, you might say: Some websites dress up like local newspapers, but they’re actually created by political groups. The facts may be real, but the goal isn’t neutral reporting — it’s persuasion.

Most media literacy lessons focus on spotting totally fake stories. Pink slime is harder to detect because it lives in the gray area of selective framing and hidden funding. That’s why it’s often overlooked.

3 Tips to Recognize Pink Slime Sites

1. Check the “About” page. Is ownership transparent? Are real editors and reporters listed?
2. Look for original reporting. Are journalists attending local events — or just rewriting press releases?
3. Search the site’s name + “funding.” Investigations may reveal partisan backing.

Helping kids understand pink slime journalism builds a deeper level of media literacy — one that asks not just Is this true? but Who wants me to believe this, and why?
