We may think we know the answer, but the researchers responsible for the study that was widely published say the results were reported in an oversimplified way and should be further explained:

  • Handwriting Benefits: Handwriting can help children understand the differences between the shape and form of letters. For instance, creating the shape of an A is different from the shape of a B and practicing handwriting those letters aids in cementing their ability to recognize those letters. So, the study showed the benefits of handwriting for letter recognition. Single letter recognition is the only learning the study mentioned,
  • A Note About Typing: Researchers assert that typing is an essential skill for children to learn in order to succeed in school, the workforce, and social and family communication. The researcher, Svetlana Pinet, Basque Center on Cognition, Brain and Language in San Sebastian, Spain, “believes typing is an important skill for students to be instructed in.”

As lifelong learners, the research suggests we all should be using typing and handwriting in ways that benefit us. Both skills are needed to help us process information, record ideas, and communicate. Neither should be eliminated or emphasized over the other. In our schools, homes, and workplaces both typing and handwriting have important uses.

So, what is the best method for remembering what we take down in our types or handwritten notes? According to the research, using practice questions – either multiple choice or open response – is “superior for supporting long term retention.” This is known as retrieval practice and can help the learner improve memory, identify gaps, build confidence, and reduce the anxiety associated with test-taking. One way to quickly create practice questions is to upload the notes taken in class or for homework to a generative AI platform and prompt for a practice test using parameters similar to what is expected in the upcoming assessment. Ask for 3-4 alternative practice tests to allow for as much practice as possible in the days leading up to the actual test date.
